Nomad Architecture was founded by Damon Strub in 2002. Damon brings to the firm over 25 years of experience in architecture and construction , as well as a long-standing commitment to sustainable design. The firm has experience in a broad range of project types, including commercial, institutional, and affordable housing. Most of our projects involve the restoration, adaptive reuse or historic preservation of existing buildings.
Design: Each of our designs responds to the unique aspects of the project -- the client’s vision, the program, context and budget. We strive to create spaces and buildings that are thoughtful, understated, and elegant. We lean toward a clean, modern aesthetic, and avoid trendy and gratuitous embellishments. We value good craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Sustainable design: Damon has been enthusiastically involved in sustainable design since the late 1970’s, and continues to be a leader in the field. At Nomad, we see energy efficiency and environmentally responsible design as an integral part of all our work. We often employ energy modeling and other tools to evaluate the costs, benefits and payback of various high-performance features that might be appropriate for each project.
Renovation: Nomad Architecture finds working with existing buildings, particularly historic structures, very rewarding. We have become adept at evaluating existing conditions then creating designs that respond to the original contextual while creating modern, livable spaces within them. And, in the big picture, far greater environmental benefits can be realized by improving the energy efficiency of our existing and antiquated building stock than by constructing new buildings, no matter how “green”.
Community development: Many of our clients are nonprofit organizations and community development corporations. Nomad Architecture is proud to work with these groups and to contribute in our small way to the common good. We know how to work within tight budget constraints and complex funding arrangements, which many of these projects require.
If you are a nonprofit organization and you have questions about an upcoming project or about an existing facility, we would be glad to assist. We will provide a consultation of up to two hours at no cost or obligation.
Furnishings: Nomad’s studio includes extensive shop space. Here, we create furniture and furnishings, incorporating reusable salvaged materials, often gleaned from demolished buildings, dumpsters, and roadside trash.
Our studio is located in Long Island City in Queens, New York. Please feel free to contact us at info@nomadarchitecture.com or (718) 389 6764
