MASTER PLAN FOR THE CHILDREN'S HAVEN SCHOOL, AZROU, MORROCO. 2004
The Haven is an orphanage and school located in central Morocco that has served Moroccan children since 1953. The Haven’s incoming directors, Deborah and Allan MacArthur, asked Nomad Architecture to prepare a master plan to help guide the Haven’s future development.
Damon visited the site in the summer of 2004 and, working with three Haven students, conducted a field survey and developed a master plan. The survey included interviews with staff and students, field measurements, a community-wide design session, and analysis of all existing systems.
The Master Plan recommends creating a central garden and patio to organize the campus, extensive safety and sanitary upgrades, reshuffling uses within the existing structures, adding new housing to accommodate up to 8 additional families, and modifying the existing heating and hot water plants to reduce energy use and operating costs.
