Common House for The Quaker Intentional Village Co-housing Community.
East Chatham, New York.

This 3,500 square foot new construction common house provides shared facilities for a co-housing community of 12 households. Facilities include a communal kitchen and dining area, guest bedrooms, laundry, child care area and a large gathering space.

The building was hand built by members of the community.

Sustainable features include:
- Heavy timber framing of locally harvested wood with cob exterior walls (clay and wood chips) and natural lime plaster finish
- Salvaged kitchen cabinets and appliances.
- Super-insulated high efficiency exterior envelope
- Solar water heating
- Extensive day lighting and passive cooling features
- High efficiency wood boiler with salvaged cast iron radiators on upper floors and radiant floor heating on first floor.
- Rainwater catchment with 2,500 gallon cistern in basement for use in laundry.
- Locally harvested and manufactured wood, including all partition framing, trim and flooring
100% natural and VOC-free interior finishes.
